Anxiety is a general term which is used for defining various disorders that lead to Uneasiness, fear, nervousness and excessive worrying. In the U.S approximately 40 million adults (age 18 years or older) are suffering from anxiety disorders, and this is more than 18% of the total population in the United States.
Anxiety can affect the way you behave and feel; in severe cases it can manifest real physical symptoms as well. People with anxiety disorders are more likely to visit the doctor and be hospitalized as compared to those who do not suffer from these disorders. The good news is anxiety disorders are highly treatable.
We all feel anxious before confronting something challenging like a test, examination or a job interview. These feelings are understandable and considered normal. The real problem starts when these feelings of fear and apprehension continue to interfere with someone’s life and keep him sleepless for the whole night.
Here the most important thing to keep in mind is, anxiety is not an illness or disease rather it is a result of a behavior. Anxiety can be a physiological, psychological or emotional outcome of behaving in an apprehensive manner.
Almost all anxiety disorders share below general symptoms:
- Panic attacks
- Fear and Uneasiness
- Sleep problems
- Cold sweaty hands or feet
- Shortness of breath
- Dry mouth
- Muscle tension
- Not being able to stay calm and still
How to Get Rid Of Anxiety & Fears
Following ways may help you to
Disconnect From Anxiety
Sometime finding a way to disconnect from your anxiety or fears will help you calm down physically. The reason behind is you can’t think clearly when you are bombarded with fearful or anxious thoughts.
In such a case the very first step is to take time out to calm you physically. You can walk around the block or make a cup of tea or take a bath, the idea is to distract you from the worry for 10 to 15 minutes.
Look For Evidence
For example, if you’re scared of getting trapped in a lift and suffocating, ask yourself if you have ever heard of this happening to someone. Ask yourself what you would say to a friend who had a similar fear.
If you avoid lift just because you fear will get trapped and suffocate, then ask yourself “have you ever hear this happening to someone else”. Most probably it doesn’t; because it rarely happens and a lot of people use lift everyday without facing any problem.
Studies have suggested that unhealthy eating may cause high levels of anxiety and stress. This is also true because what you eat has a big impact on your mental performance. Incorporating whole grains, more fruits and vegetables into your daily diet surely help people with anxiety. But you should make sure you don’t have any food allergies.
Visualize The Worst
Visualize the worst version of something that makes you anxious or fearful. For example if you fear you may have a heart attack, visualize yourself actually having it. What I am trying to say is; chase your fears because they will run away when you chase them.
These were some ways to get rid of anxiety and fears. Anxiety isn’t an illness or disease, rather it is a result of behaving in an apprehensive way. And this apprehensive behavior results into some physiological, psychological or emotional effects.
You can get rid of anxiety & fear or minimize them to a certain level by using some anti-anxiety ways.
